Test code: | 1521 |
Type of disorder: | Neuromuscular Disorders |
Disease(s) tested for: | Myasthenia Gravis (MG) |
Tests included: | Acetylcholine Receptor Binding Antibody Acetylcholine Receptor Blocking Antibody Acetylcholine Receptor Modulating Antibody MuSK Antibody Test |
Special Notes: | The Acetylcholine Receptor Blocking, Binding, and Modulating Antibodies will be performed at Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute, San Juan Capistrano. The reflexed test, MuSK Antibody Test will be performed at Athena Diagnostics, Inc. Reflex criteria: If AChR blocking is <15% of inhibition, AChR binding is < or = 0.30 nmol/L, and AChR modulating is <32% binding inhibition, then MuSK Antibody Test will be added at an additional charge (CPT code: 83519) |
Clinical Significance: | Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disorder affecting the neuromuscular junction and characterized by fluctuating weakness and fatigability of skeletal muscles. 80% of patients with generalized MG have serum antibodies to Acetylcholine receptor (AChR) - Blocking, Binding, or Modulating. Antibodies to muscle-specific kinase (MuSK) make up a variable proportion of the remaining 20%. |
Methodology: | Immunoassay |
